Since I saw a picture of the Monastery of the Panayia Khozoviotissa many years ago, I always wanted to visit this place. The Monastery is reportedly founded by the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Commenus in 1088. According to the “Amorgos Monastery of the Panayia Khozoviotissa” by Lila Marangou, “the miraculous arrival of on Amorgos of an icon of the Blessed Virgin from Khozova (or Kozovo) in Palestine occurred at the time of the Iconoclastic Controversy”. The Monastery is standing on the edge of cliff. From the Monastery, one can see nothing but wild cliffs and deep blue ocean, melting into the horizon. A famous movie “Le Grand Blue (Big Blue)” was filmed here in front of the Monastery. They also filmed the movie in Sicily and French Riviera, but at the beginning (when Jacques Mayol was child) and the end of the scene (when Enzo and Mayol try their last diving) was filmed here in Amorgos. When I returned to Amorgos recently was the last day of 2004 Athens Olympic games. At night, everybody in Katapola was watching the closing ceremony (and they must have used all the electricity in the island). In the middle of climax, electricity was down and the entire island in darkness. There was a beautiful full moon shinning on the top of the mountain. I am so impressed with a natural beauty of Amorgos and its kind people. Unlike other Cyclades islands, Amorgos got a typical Cyclades island life which I enjoy.
