AmorgosAGreece: Khozoviotissa, Port Katapola, Nikouria

cTraveling in the Midst of The Biggest Boat Accidentc

If there is such a place like gthe edge of the world,h Amorgos is certainly among those. Among all Greek islands which I visited, Amorgos is very special place for me. The island maintains natural beauty: very steep rocky mountain, deep blue ocean, and more than anything else, Panayia Khozoviotissa Monastery got "impossible to explain" beauty. It is standing on the rocky wall. I really hope this island keeps its beauty for ever. One day, I would love to see the monastry from the ocean on the night of fullmoon. When I visited Amorgos for the first time, I was waiting the boat to Piraeus at Port Katapola at 2am. It was beautiful fullmoon night, and I imagined how beautiful that monastry will be at night on the night of fullmoon. There are some places in the world where natual beauty surpassing human being. Amorgos is certainly one of such places.

Although located between tourist-popular Santorini and Ios islands, it is not that easy to go there as there aren't many boats to go to Amorgos, especially during the off-season. I visited Amorgos for the first time in the autumn of the year 2000. This was particularly the most difficult time to travel Greek islands due to the biggest-ever boat accident which occurred in Paros. One has to wait a week or several weeks (if any) to go to Amorgos (from Mykonos or Naxos) as two third of ships in Greece were forced to anchored in Piraeus (Athens) for security checks after this accident. Nobody knew when the boat was coming even Greek tourist agencies. When I arrived at the port of Katapola (main port in Amorgos), it was near midnight. Next day, I realized there were only about 10 tourists in the island. Nevertheless, I had a passion to visit this island at that time to see the Panayia Khozoviotissa.
